Fidelity to Metaphysics

Sometimes the questions are asked: "Why cannot we combine the material and the spiritual methods of healing? Cannot prayer be used along with medical means?" While we would never say that prayer cannot be helpful under any circumstances, still when one understands the basis of metaphysical prayer as outlined in Christian Science, he will see that the two methods are not sympathetic, and so they do not cooperate. One is based upon Spirit as the only substance and intelligence; the other is based upon matter as the source of life and intelligence. The two methods approach the task of healing from opposite standpoints. Spirit is the antithesis of matter.

Jesus pointed this out very distinctly. He said: "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Matt. 6:24; And in Jesus' healing there was never any dependence upon matter for aid. His method was purely spiritual.

Our questioner might well reply, "Well, things have changed since Jesus' time, and the modern developments in medicine are quite in advance of the methods of Bible times." But refinements based on an erroneous premise never lead toward real solutions. It is becoming more and more evident that dependence upon drugs is creating more problems than it is solving. Salvation from the Ills of human experience does not come from matter but from divine Mind, or infinite Spirit.
