Some time ago, I noticed the advertisement of a Christian Science...
Some time ago, I noticed the advertisement of a Christian Science lecture which was to be given in a public hall near our home. My wife and I decided to go, mainly out of curiosity, and certainly without expectations of any kind. I read the literature which was handed to us as we left the hall, and the next day I borrowed the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. At that time I was suffering from a condition of the eyes which for many years had prevented my reading for longer than a quarter to a half hour at a time, and if I attempted more I suffered severe pains followed by very bad headaches. Two leading eye specialists had been consulted many years before regarding this condition. They prescribed glasses, which they said I would always have to wear, but they gave practically no relief. I was so absorbed in the textbook at that first reading, however, that I read on for about three hours without realizing it, and to my surprise, without any ill effect, and from that moment until now I have been able to read just as much as I desire, without pain, and for over one year without the aid of glasses, which I have destroyed. My headaches have practically ceased and on the rare occasions that the suggestion comes the claim is invariably quickly met by the understanding of God which Christian Science teaches.
I was also suffering from valvular disease of the heart, on account of which I had just been discharged from the army, after having spent nearly nine months in different military hospitals. I was warned on discharge that I would need looking after, and that I must indulge in no exercise which was not of a gentle nature, but in spite of the care received I suffered a lot of pain and was full of fear for the future. This condition very rapidly improved as I went on studying Christian Science, and a few months afterwards I was quite healed and was playing tennis, cycling, and doing other strenuous things without any difficulty or suffering.
Needless to say, I am more than grateful for this relief from physical bondage, but more important still is the proof of the reality and power of spiritual law, of which physical healing is but the outward manifestation. On page 207 of Science and Health we read, "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." The application of this truth has been a tower of strength to me in facing many seemingly difficult problems, particularly in business, and in spite of the unsettled and troublous times through which the industrial world seems to be passing. I am learning to prove the truth of Mrs. Eddy's opening words in the Preface of our textbook (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."—
