I did not come into Christian Science for any physical...

I did not come into Christian Science for any physical healing, having been blessed with excellent health from boyhood, but rather from a desire to be a better man. My life was happy, as happiness in a material world goes, yet I was not at peace. Why am I here? Whence did I come? And whither do I go? These were thoughts which would often come to me, and the denominational church in which I had been brought up could not and did not answer these queries to my satisfaction; so from the seed of Abraham, multiplied as the sand upon the seashore, another "went out, not knowing whither he went. . . . For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God."

I desired sincerely to know more of God, and to prove His nearness. I did not understand then what I now know, that this very desire was prayer, and therefore it must and did receive its answer. And it is with the proof of a lasting joy that I now pour out my thanks to God and my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, His messenger to this age, for preparing a feast of spiritual things, of which all may partake in proportion to their desire to be fed. Seeking God, good, for the sake of good only, one's prayer will assuredly be answered, as mine was, and one will be, must be, must be, led to the teachings of Christian Science, because Christian Science is the Christ, Truth, and there is only one Truth, and to know even something of Truth is to have had a vision of the Christ, and to have awakened as Jacob did out of his sleep, when he said, "Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not. . . . This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." A knowledge of Christian Science is the gate of heaven, the Christ, Truth, which says, "I am the door."

During the few years I have known of Christian Science I have been protected from all ill effects following five years of very strenuous war work, my daily employment occupying twelve to fourteen hours for six days a week, and occasionally Sundays. Moreover, my health during the whole of this period was excellent. I was healed of the tobacco habit three months after coming into Christian Science, notwithstanding I had been a heavy smoker for twenty years. I have seen my wife raised from a continual bed of sickness to be a healthy woman and now capable of doing a heavy day's work distributing Christian Science literature. I have seen inharmonious conditions in my boy's school instantaneously healed by taking the case at once to God. And more than all this, I am grateful to our dear Leader for having taught us the meaning of unceasing prayer, the truth that maketh free, and who has taught us from our hearts to say (Poems, p. 69) :—
