Egyptian rally
In an echo of earlier “Arab Spring” demonstrations, thousands of protestors gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the site of the 18-day uprising earlier this year, to protest the slow rate of change since President Hosni Mubarak was toppled from power in February. Opposition leaders and protesters said they wanted the military government to move more quickly on trials for Mubarak and his officers, as well as those accused of killing and injuring protesters during the uprising.
Written shortly after the February protests, “Love at work in Egypt -- and everywhere” explores how a commitment to genuine spiritual freedom and justice can inform our prayers for Egypt and other nations still going through repression, upheaval, or violence. The author writes, “Love fueled the protesters’ persistence and lent moral authority to their cause … In Egypt, we can pray to see Love’s message in action, insisting that imposed societal conditions cannot define, or confine, the people.”
