Conquering Fear through Love

In "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 93), "Fear is a belief of sensation in matter: this belief is neither maintained by Science nor supported by facts, and exists only as fable." Fear is concerned with matter, with mortal self-love, anxiety regarding the physical body and material possessions. It is never entertained in connection with any spiritual verity. Fear can be eradicated in human consciousness by learning how to obey the divine Principle, Love, in which there is no fear. In proportion as we apprehend and reflect spiritual verity through Christian Science, the fear of succumbing to sickness or sin ceases to deceive us.

This bogey of the human race has no creator and no visible presence, but seems to hover in thought as a valueless, loveless shadow. Fear should not be thought of as in a category by itself, for it is but another phase of idolatrous material belief to be conquered through the power and purity of divine Mind,—just as one would conquer any other malign influence of the so-called carnal mind. Man in God's likeness is never touched by fear or sin, for he expresses the pure intelligence of divine Mind.

We find freedom from the obsession of fear in the measure of our reliance on Spirit for our health, our righteousness, our happiness, and our supply. One who seeks to recover his health through Christian Science is required to give up material remedies in order that he may rely solely on the healing power of God, good. Spiritual trust is the antidote for fear. This trust increases with usage and is recompensed by peace of mind and body. "In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me."
