With heartfelt gratitude for God's care, which we have...

With heartfelt gratitude for God's care, which we have been able to prove through Christian Science, I should like to tell of the following healing as it was told me by my mother and the practitioner who gave her loving help.

I was about a year and a half old at the time. The apartment below ours had been occupied by some medical and dental students who, in moving, left behind a box of bottles, several of which contained poisonous acids used in experimental work. On behalf of the landlord, my mother had gone downstairs to instruct the janitor in some necessary cleaning work which had to be done in the empty apartment. She had taken me with her, and in playing, I found the box of bottles. As I investigated one of them, the contents spilled upon my dress. When I endeavored to wipe the fluid off, it ignited, and before my mother could reach me, the acid had destroyed my clothing and eaten into the flesh.

A practitioner was immediately called. At the time of her arrival the sense testimony was severe. The acid had burned to the hip bone and the limb was drawn up to the abdomen. However, within an hour and a half all sense of suffering had ceased and the limb had somewhat regained its normal position. By this time some of the neighbors had become aware of the distressing condition, and it had also come to the ears of the medical students. Their sense of guilt in having left the acid there, coupled with their fear of consequences, caused them to come to my mother and request that they might be allowed to take me to the hospital. My mother refused, knowing that I was in God's care. Her refusal made them very aggressive, and they said I would not recover, and that my mother and the practitioner would be held responsible.
