Christian Evangelist

In your issue of August 20 there appears a letter from one of your subscribers in which he takes exception to my correction of certain statements.

This writer is, of course, entitled to his own religious beliefs, and my purpose in replying to his letter is not to carry on a personal controversy. But inasmuch as he has referred to and given a wrong interpretation of what is written on page 25 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, may I again ask permission for space in your columns to quote what the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science writes on this page, as follows: "The spiritual essence of blood is sacrifice. The efficacy of Jesus' spiritual offering is infinitely greater than can be expressed by our sense of human blood. The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon 'the accursed tree,' than when it was flowing in his veins as he went daily about his Father's business. His true flesh and blood were his Life; and they truly eat his flesh and drink his blood, who partake of that divine Life."

With further reference to the teachings of Christian Science in regard to the crucifixion, Mrs. Eddy writes on page 24 of the Christian Science textbook, "The efficacy of the crucifixion lay in the practical affection and goodness it demonstrated for mankind."
