Instructed, guided, and protected

About a year before I became interested in Christian Science, an elderly aunt of mine, who was like a mother to me, was under a hopeless medical prognosis. She was not a Christian Scientist, but in her emergency she recalled a brief contact she had had some years before with someone who, having witnessed my aunt's suffering, began to talk Christian Science to her in a most kindly manner and had healed her in one evening of a chronic migraine headache which never returned. Now, years later, in her great need my aunt began to reach out for the same remedy. And since I was always at hand, one day she asked me to begin to read Christian Science to her. I was amazed, for I knew nothing about the subject, but because I would have done anything for her I went to a nearby Christian Science Reading Room and asked the librarian how to go about fulﬁlling my aunt's request.

Discerning my ignorance, the librarian laid a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy on the counter. Then setting it side-by-side with a Bible she added a very thin paperbound pamphlet which she called the Christian Science Quarterly. Pointing to the two books she said, "These are your textbooks, and (pointing to the thin pamphlet) this is your guide, your plan of study."
