Kidneys resume normal functioning

Last summer my three adult children came home and insisted that I check myself into the hospital’s emergency room. I had been experiencing urinary problems, insomnia, and weight loss, and was impatient, unhappy, and cranky.

I spent three nights in the hospital and was informed by the doctors that my kidneys were failing. I felt unable to pray as taught in Christian Science and couldn’t seem to focus long enough to read even one paragraph of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Fortunately, I could listen any time of the day or night to the weekly Bible Lessons from the Christian Science Quarterly (at quarterly.christianscience.com) and to articles from the Christian Science periodicals (on JSH-Online.com). Every night I would listen to the wonderful truths in these Lessons and articles and then wrestle with opposing suggestions that I was helpless, weak, and separated from God and my true, spiritual self. I affirmed that I was, on the contrary, the child of God, created in His image and likeness—spiritual, not material.

Over a five-month period, I employed several different Christian Science practitioners. At my children’s insistence, I also agreed to a series of medical tests and checkups, but I took no drugs and addressed through Christian Science treatment each issue raised by the testing. Each practitioner I worked with provided valuable spiritual inspiration.

For example, one helped me to see that while waiting for test results I could be proactive in knowing that I could see and believe only the Christly, or true, report of the spiritual man, who is never separate from his divine source. Another practitioner told me that I was an individual manifestation of God, infinite Love’s “noblest work” (Mary Alice Dayton, Christian Science Hymnal, Hymn 51). With that, I immediately felt the palpable presence of the divine Comforter. Finally, gaining a fuller understanding of my relation to God, good, helped to destroy the belief that acute or chronic disease could be real or powerful or that my kidneys could fail.

The first sign of healing progress occurred just one week after I left the hospital. The doctors required a test analyzing chemistry and organic functions. After the test, the attending nurse said, “Remarkably, you passed with flying colors.” However, during the next month, there was no improvement. In fact, things appeared to get worse. A doctor told me they could not determine the cause of the kidney failure and recommended that I get a second opinion. I did not believe these reports but instead doubled down in my study of Christian Science to eliminate the notion that these reports could influence God’s perfect man.

Before long, I found the mental discipline to again be able to read the Christian Science Bible Lessons. This helped me to treat myself more effectively based on the solid foundation of God as divine Principle. I became more aware of the Christ, the true idea of God. I began reading in the middle of the night for fifteen to twenty minutes—long enough to calm my thoughts and fall back asleep.

I held to the spiritual facts in these two passages: “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet” (Proverbs 3:24) and “Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal” (Science and Health, p. 306). Praying with these truths, I began to recognize that my life is inseparable from God, divine Life.

Despite numerous tests over several months, the doctors said they could not find any underlying cause for the kidney failure. At the end of this period, the tests showed a remarkable recovery of the kidney functions. All the numbers were in the normal range. How did the kidneys go from chronic failure to completely normal? The doctors admitted they were puzzled.

God, divine Principle, had shown me the spiritual truth of my being, and as I fully recognized this, all things became new. I gained back the lost weight and began sleeping more soundly at night. The previous crankiness turned to pure joy. I was more patient. My pleasant disposition returned.

This healing resulted in a newfound appreciation for God’s ever-presence, the healing touch of the Christ, and the clarity with which Mrs. Eddy interprets the divine Comforter. I came to see that as God’s expression—just like every individual—I am God’s “noblest work.” As the first chapter of Genesis declares, He made me in His image and “very good” (v. 31) and gave me dominion over all things. I am indeed grateful for this healing.

I would like to verify my husband’s healing. I went with him to the hospital for the numerous tests, praying the entire time. We appreciated the doctors’ help, but when one doctor handed me a paper that told us to prepare for dialysis, something rebelled in us both. We committed to staying the course with Christian Science healing and not dialysis. This firm stand gave us courage and strength to face down the aggressive suggestions of disease.

From then on, we were expectant of healing, and each time before we were given test results, we asked God for His report on Chris’ health. As things improved, our prayer became to help others see this healing, too. Our family, friends, and neighbors witnessed this healing and saw Chris’ happy self and health resume. He now plays tennis regularly and is stronger in his stand for Christian Science healing. He saw that it works and that the healing results are permanent.
