The importance of humility in our relationships

The relationship between mothers and daughters-in-law can be a very common topic of conversation whenever a group of women gathers. It’s an ancient subject that keeps coming up. And it’s even commonly made fun of in jokes, games, and the media.

Sometime ago a friend of mine was telling me about one of her relatives who had suffered a lot because of the treatment she had received from her mother-in-law at the beginning of her marriage. Now this relative was having the same attitude toward her own daughter-in-law.

What happens in this relationship? Why are there so many discords in it? What’s at work—jealousy, possession, dominion, antagonism, power? Thinking about these elements, I’ve realized they are the same ones that bring about great conflicts around the world, and it often seems complicated to achieve a good understanding between both sides.
