A perfect reflection

Some time ago a friend and I went kayaking in Northern California. It was a beautiful day on the lake. The temperature was perfect, there was no wind, and the water was as smooth as glass. In fact, the water was like a mirror, casting a perfect reflection of the scenery around the lake. Both my friend and I commented that if we could take a picture of the hills reflected in the water, looking at that picture you wouldn’t be able to tell if the image was the reflection or the actual hills.

We had a wonderful morning kayaking, but later that evening I noticed an ache in my arm and wrist. I thought the ache must have been the result of all the paddling I’d done that day, and I just assumed that it would go away in a short time. But several days went by, and it didn’t get better—in fact, the pain got worse. I began to feel weakness and other abnormal sensations in my arm. This made me realize I should quit ignoring the problem! I immediately began to pray about it and gave myself a Christian Science treatment.

The subject of the Christian Science Bible Lesson that week was “Adam and Fallen Man,” and the Lesson included the spiritual account of creation given in the first chapter of Genesis. As I read that “God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him” (verse 27), I thought about the perfect reflection I had seen on the lake.
