Speedy healing
One morning about ten years ago I was home alone. Suddenly I was overcome with acute abdominal pain. Had I not had previous success in turning to God for the healing of illness, I would no doubt have called 911. But I had by that time in my life seen on many occasions that God is able to dispatch illness from our lives immediately, effectively, and tenderly.
Because of the pain, I was unable to pray for myself in a deep or meaningful way. So I called a Christian Science healer. I could barely get to the phone and briefly state my need. But I was confident then that all would be well.
Ten or fifteen minutes later I wasn't any better, however, and was really afraid. So I urgently called back. I asked the person if he would pray for me out loud, which he did with unflinching compassion. One thing he did was to paraphrase that week's Christian Science Bible Lesson for me. This included passages from Mary Baker Eddy's book Science and Health, which explained what the Bible was saying about the subject of that week's lesson. The ideas I was hearing—and mentally endorsing—during this call of perhaps half an hour caused me to feel loved by God to an extent that I have difficulty describing in mere language. I had this serene feeling of well-being. I was no longer afraid. We hung up.
