The testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals have helped...
The testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals have helped and inspired me all my adult life, so it is time for me to witness to all that Christian Science has done for me also. In raising a family of four children there have been many opportunities to experience the healing power of God, and a great deal of His protection has been apparent also. Two experiences stand out.
When I was flying in a single-engine airplane with my husband and son one winter day, our engine suddenly stopped at nine thousand feet. We found out later that the stoppage was caused by ice. The air controller we notified of the emergency gave us our exact location and distance from the nearest airport, but it was obvious that we could not glide that far. For a moment I was almost paralyzed by fear. Then I began to pray to realize our oneness with God, divine Mind, and the impossibility of our being separated from Him or outside of His complete control. The Bible passage from Psalms came to mind "Whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there" (139:7,8). Also a phrase from Romans comforted me: "nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God" (8:39).
My husband remained very calm, guiding the airplane as it descended. We came out of the clouds at approximately nine hundred feet and saw a rough-looking field below us and the freeway to our left. It appeared we would have to land in the field, but suddenly the ice dissipated enough for my husband to maneuver the plane to the freeway and land safely. The rest of the ice soon melted. After checking the plane, and getting the necessary permissions, we flew to the nearest airport to have the plane checked again. The next day we proceeded to our destination without incident.
