Growing up in a family that depended on Christian Science,...

Growing up in a family that depended on Christian Science, and prayed to God for answers to every problem, gave me a childhood that was free from illness and a home full of trust and confidence. My family had many healings, but one in particular stands out to me.

When I was very small I got too close to a burning pile of rubbish and my clothes caught fire. My parents chose prayer as the best method of healing for me, and called a Christian Science practitioner to help us. One leg was badly burned and needed to be kept clean and wrapped, which my mother did. After a while, however, she found the task overwhelming and told the practitioner she would make a call the next morning to a kind neighbor, a medical nurse, to ask her to take over the daily bandaging.

But in the morning my mother discovered with great joy that new flesh had replaced the burnt flesh; there was no longer a need to ask for the neighbor's help. The healing progressed quickly and completely. I have since heard of similar deep burns, and realize that under medical care skin grafting might likely have been necessary, and even that use of the leg might have remained diminished. Because Christian Science treatment is thorough, my activity was never limited. In fact, as I grew up I enjoyed competitive swimming, gymnastics, dance performances, and marching band.
