One day my sister told me that there was a religion that healed sickness as Christ Jesus did. People could be healed by Christian Science. They could ask help of Christian Science practitioners, who devote their lives to understanding God and heal through prayer, and they could read a book: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of this wonderful religion.
I was surprised that such a religion existed. I thought: "This is it; it's the one for me," for I had always believed there was a religion that could make people well and happy. I went to a Christian Science Reading Room to obtain the book. However, I did not want to take up this religion without first seeing concrete proof of its effectiveness. I decided to put it to the test at the first available opportunity. This soon came.
One day I had a sore throat that was so severe I could hardly swallow. I thought: "Here's an opportunity to put this religion to the test." I took my book, Science and Health, opened it and laid it on the table. I sat down and began to read. My eyes fell on this sentence: "You must control evil thoughts in the first instance, or they will control you in the second." This sentence made so much sense to me! I could see that evil of any kind could not control my body. Jesus said the devil, or evil, was "a liar" and a lie. After thinking about it for a few minutes I realized that my cheeks, which before had been burning, were now cool, and I could swallow easily. The healing was permanent and served as my first proof that Christian Science heals.
