Letters to the Press

FROM THE COMMITTEE ON PUBLICATION

Seaford Banner

People object when they perceive that public thought is being manipulated through the misuse of the media. As a result, what is becoming more valued is the simple expression of our deepest convictions in ways that are genuine and that can't be misunderstood or misused. In the following letter, a lifelong Christian Scientist speaks from the heart in bearing witness to what Christian Science and Christ Jesus' life actually mean to her. She wrote it in response to an article in a local newspaper in which a conservative Christian minister had spoken of Christian Science as a "cult"—and had then tried to "prove" it by quoting out of context passages from the writings of its Founder, Mary Baker Eddy.

Whatever one's individual views of Christian Science may be, it's impossible to miss the Christian spirit expressed in this woman's reply. As Mrs. Eddy herself once wrote, "When the heart speaks, however simple the words, its language is always acceptable to those who have hearts." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 262.
