Let the books really tell you

God Not Only Is but Does

"I just don't understand how you can go on reading those two books day after day, week in week out, year after year. You must know them by heart by now!" Such remarks are often made to students of Christian Science by those who have little or no knowledge of this subject. The two books are the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

How is it that these books can constantly maintain interest? Is it because, ideally at least, the Christian Scientist never stands still? He is always developing his knowledge, as experience and revelation mold and direct his consciousness. So, familiar passages in both books are always taking on new meanings. And new problems demand new solutions.

The ever-freshness of the Bible and Science and Health was illustrated to me, for instance, after some special studies had thrown much stronger light on certain aspects of their fundamental teaching. Point after point stood out with renewed intensity, and I saw as never before that what these books were asking me to do was to acknowledge my selfhood as God's spiritual idea and to understand that matter just didn't exist.
