Members often Think that adding programs or activities will bring people back to churches. According to Dr. Richard J. Foster, author, speaker, and professor of spiritual formation at Azusa Pacific University in California, however, a key attraction is that the church is alive. What makes it alive?

He answers that a church is alive when there are "core convictions that God is alive and at work. That's what we need to go after: A realization that God is here and working among his people."

To understand what direction a church should go in, Dr. Foster advises, "Wait, shut up, be quiet and listen to God."
