For as long as I can remember, I suffered from constipation. This condition led me to turn to various material remedies for its relief. I relied completely on medicines and exercise to bring about the normal bodily function and only realized the precarious nature of this trust when, during the Second World War, I found myself in New Guinea, far from the normal sources of civilization, and my most trusted remedy had run out.

In the meantime I had become interested in Christian Science and was trying to grasp some of its teachings. I realized it was about time I gave up relying on pills and purgatives and used what I knew of Christian Science. As my understanding of Christian Science grew, I gradually abandoned dependence on material aids. Finally when I found myself in the jungle in New Guinea, where there was no opportunity of obtaining the drug to which I had been accustomed, I realized that there must be radical reliance on Christian Science to overcome the trouble.

As my understanding of God's presence and power increased, the difficulty ceased to exist. About this same time I was also healed of smoking. That was many years ago, and the healings have been permanent.
