Finding One's True Ambition

[Written Especially for Young People]

Is there anyone who has not, in his youth, considered the question, "What is my ambition?" Some may respond to this question with a joyous anticipation of reaching cherished goals, perhaps meeting and untangling some snarl of present-day civilized existence. There may be some, however, who regard the future with dread, fearing inability to accomplish desired aims; others who are tossed in a whirlpool of indecision; or still others who may be lured by promises of mere applause or wealth. To all these, Christian Science offers the needful help. Through the application of its teachings one may be safely steered away from the rocks and shoals of human dilemma, into the open sea of useful activity. Let us consider how the truths taught in Christian Science may be applied to the problems with which youth is beset.

Suppose some young student has chosen a lifework, hoping through honest endeavor to reach a desired goal, but has admitted into his thought suggestions of fear—fear that there may be no demand for his services, fear of competition, or of possible failure. As a student of Christian Science, he may refute and cast out such suggestions, for he knows that his real selfhood expresses God, and that his talents and capabilities are qualities of God, good, and therefore are needed; he knows that as an individual he has a niche, a place of service, which no other can fill; and he knows that proportionately as he accepts God's goodness and relies on His sustaining power he will find only good, activity, and success in his experience. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 199), "The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible."

For those faced with the seeming problem of indecision as to the choice of a lifework, Christian Science teaches that man is under the direct control of the one governing Principle, divine Mind, and that when one is willing to follow Mind's directing, to relinquish self-will and personal motives, he will find that God does guide him, sometimes in a most unexpected way. One who relies upon Love's guidance cannot suffer from indecision, for his decisions come unfailingly from the loving Father-Mother God. As we read in Proverbs, "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
