Among the Churches

Current Notes

Newport, Oregon (Society).—On August 24, 1941, the church edifice of Christian Science Society, Newport, Oregon, was dedicated in two services, which were carried out in the regular form, except that the following history of the movement in this vicinity was read by the First Reader:

"As long ago as 1888, when Newport was an isolated summer resort reached only over a difficult mountain road, a group of vacationists from Portland brought to this locality their new-found treasure, the religion of spiritual healing, or Christian Science. During the summers, for a number of years, they came to Newport and gradually interested a number of the local residents, meeting at the various homes for Sunday services. Then they began meeting in a hall, and the services were continued throughout the year by those who had become interested. This was soon after the year 1900.

"About 1910, Christian Science Society, Newport, was organized and carried on for several years. Due to the removing to other localities of many of these early members, the number was so depleted that the charter was given up. However, services were held by a faithful few throughout the years until, in March, 1925, an informal society was organized, and in 1926 the present society was granted a charter from The Mother Church. From the year 1926 until 1938 the society met in the City Hall in the library room; then it was decided to build, having accumulated through a building fund an amount sufficient almost to complete a building such as was desired. With contributions which came in, the structure was complete and paid for in that year, 1938. Because it was the desire of the members to have the church completely furnished before the dedication, it was decided to apply to the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy for funds to purchase furnishings. This was done, and the grant was received after all requirements had been fulfilled."—Waldport Tribune.
