Building respect

The Christian Science Monitor played a pivotal role in deepening my relationship with a relative who had a negative view of Christian Science.

One time this family member visited us for a month. She is a deeply religious person and I’ve always admired her. I longed to talk with her about God. I had been praying to know that we are both children of the one God, both loved by God, and both expressions of the same Mind.

This individual did have a deep respect for The Christian Science Monitor. It was often quoted on the radio in her home country, as its reporting was considered fair and helpful. So while this relative was staying with us, she saw issues of The Christian Science Monitor arrive daily, along with the monthly World Monitor magazine, which was published at that time.

One day she picked up the magazine and read it through. From then on she collected the mail each day so she could read the daily newspaper.

Routinely reading a publication with the words Christian Science on it began to lessen this individual’s fear of the denomination. Soon we were having heartfelt conversations about God and freely sharing ideas about praying for family and about personal issues. We developed a close, affectionate relationship.

To this day, we continue to have great respect for each other’s faith, and we love to pray together. I believe it was The Christian Science Monitor that opened this door. I am forever grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for insisting that the words Christian Science be part of the title of our newspaper, as its purpose is to bless and heal.
