In the early 1970s, just prior to an airplane trip across the Atlantic, I developed an agonizing earache. As the trip would involve a long overnight flight, I checked with my doctor, who told me I had a perforated left eardrum. A specialist confirmed this. I was advised to postpone the travel. As I knew it was impossible to reschedule my leave, I flew against this advice, and had a very unpleasant few hours, suffering pain and loud whistling in the ear throughout the flight.
Although the discomfort eventually lessened, I was troubled for many years by recurrences of the symptoms. Eventually I became a Christian Scientist. However, as this was not a constant difficulty, I put this particular problem on the "back burner" as far as prayer was concerned.
Then in April 1990, I woke one night with a severe earache. It was hard to pray for myself, and I called a practitioner to help me through prayer. Sleep seemed impossible.
