My first knowledge of the London bombs today was when a friend phoned from the US to check that I was okay. Where I live and work, on the edge of London proper, there was neither sight nor sound of attack, and I hadn't been tracking the news.

Since then, e-mails and phone calls have been flowing in from around the world from concerned friends and colleagues.
