Finding Church, restoring integrity

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

After our family moved from a very rural area of the Canadian Maritimes to a fast-paced cosmopolitan suburb of Boston, the challenge of living around so many differing values caused upheaval in our family. But my mother’s strong moral response taught me some good lessons.

For example, one night my dad came home quite excited. Someone at work had given him a terrific deal on a set of suitcases. At first my mom was excited too, but then she began to wonder why they had cost so little. My dad was sure no one he knew had stolen the luggage. But he was less certain whether it was our responsibility to worry about where it had come from.

During this time, there had been many reports in the press of gangland killings in Boston. And in our kitchen that evening, my mom challenged my dad’s thinking. She pointed out that the gang members were involved in prostitution, drugs and murder, as well as theft.
