FREE FROM PAIN AND STIFFNESS

About six years ago, just after moving into a new home with my new husband, I began to experience pain, swelling, and stiffness that in various ways affected my knees, feet, and hands. This made it difficult to balance myself when first getting out of bed. In addition, there was a weakness in my wrists requiring me to use both hands to hold a pitcher of water, for example. I spent some time feeling sorry for myself, thinking I'd finally found a wonderful man to share my life with, and now I was losing the ability to move freely and painlessly.

But then I woke up. I knew that my current thinking was going to lead nowhere good. My father, who was not a Christian Scientist, had suffered with rheumatoid arthritis for many years. I had seen my dad's suffering over the years, ultimately resulting in the replacement of both knee joints. So I was keenly aware that medical science had little to offer beyond pain management, even when joints are replaced.

So I really began to pray and "stand porter at the door of thought" (Science and Health, p. 392). I claimed my identity as a child of God—upright, pure, and free—and vigorously rejected every single claim of discomfort, stiffness, etc.
