THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

OAK-TREE EMBRACE

It snows so rarely in my part of England that when it does, I race out of doors with my camera. This photograph was taken on just such a day, up the road from where I live. It's a very special place to me. It's called the Avenue of Oaks, and is made up of two rows of ancient oak trees stretching along the road for about a mile. Some of them were planted to commemorate a visit here by Queen Elizabeth I more than 400 years ago.

On this occasion, the sun was just rising, so the scene had that beautiful morning glow, enhanced by the pure and gleaming white snow. The light was magical, and filled me with joy. I felt warm inside, despite the cold.

As I wandered around taking pictures, I looked up at the branches and smiled. That day they looked like arms stretching out to embrace me. A few minutes later I found myself humming the tune that accompanies these words by Mary Baker Eddy: "His arm encircles me, and mine, and all (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 207).
