It was in 1925, when I read an interview which a representative of The Christian Science Monitor had with a young woman in Boston who had started her own business, that I was prompted to launch on a business career of my own. It seemed the young woman had carried out everything that I had always wanted to do, and the effect of the article was as if someone were saying to me, "Do it." That very day I rented space in a large building in San Francisco. I was on my way!

As I relied absolutely on Christian Science, wonderful things unfolded to me. It was fall when I opened my business, and the article I manufactured was a seasoned one for the oncoming holidays. I was successful until after the beginning of the new year, when there was a period of ten days during which I did not have any activity—no customers and not even a telephone call. The temptation came to believe that after all I had made a mistake in going into this business.

In my despair I called on a friend, who was a Christian Science practitioner. I was utterly downcast; and when I entered her office, she exclaimed, "My, what a face!' I was despairing because my business appeared to be unsuccessful and I feared the money I had Put into it would be lost. I asked, "What shall I do?" and she replied, "Tomorrow morning before you open the door, smile, for you are always in the presence of God; then put your key in the door and say, 'Dear God, what can I do for You today?'"
