Many years ago, as a young husband and a young father, I was a run-of-the-mill salesman. I thoroughly believed in the use of alcohol for success as a saleman. I erroneously thought it would open certain doors and present me as a hail-fellow-well-met. I also believed the use of alcohol was necessary to reach a proper social status. The habit was indulged in to the point where it was rapidly robbing me of my ability to be responsible for the support of my home and family or to hold a job.

Finally I was convinced of the error of my ways but found it impossible to overcome the habit. Then in sheer desperation I went with my wife to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. At this meeting I was particularly impressed by the kindliness and understanding shown me by the members of the church. I was given the feeling that I belonged. I was not looked upon as an outcast or a hopeless sinner. There I heard facts which at first aroused my curiosity and later a desire for understanding. This led to a visit with a Christian Science practitioner. In due course I was healed not only of the alcohol habit but of the tobacco habit.

Many useful and inspiring things happened during the course of this Christian Science healing, and with the mesmeric deterrent of the alcohol habit eliminated, I gradually assumed my proper place in the business world. In the industry where I had formerly struggled as a salesman, I soon had risen to the position of vice-president of one of the large companies. Later I served my country as an officer in the Army in World War II. Then I received a civilian appointment to serve our Government overseas and finally a Presidential appointment as Assistant Secretary of the United States Army.
