I took up medical nursing as a...

I took up medical nursing as a profession, following it for about ten years. Even before that, I had known vaguely of Christian Science and felt that some day I would look into it because its logic appealed to me. I had a copy of the textbook by Mrs. Eddy; but because it seemed contrary to my profession, I kept it well in the background.

Toward the end of the ten years, I witnessed a healing in Science which aroused my dormant interest. A child who had one arm partially paralyzed as the result of an automobile accident regained full use of the arm through Christian Science treatment. Within a few months I gave up nursing and turned to the daily study of this Science. It was an invaluable help in the rearing of two sons, in the healing of burns, cuts, and injuries supposedly common to childhood and also in its preventive aspect, keeping the children remarkably free from so-called children's diseases. It also enabled me to guide them more wisely in the field of human relationships than I could have done without it.

One healing in our family was that of an infected foot. For a time my elder son worked weekends in a local store. One Saturday morning he cut one ankle badly on a fragment of a broken bottle. That afternoon the storekeeper brought him home, urging that the boy see a doctor, because he felt that stitches were necessary. At once I turned to God in prayer; but because the condition did not respond quickly, I called a practitioner, who agreed to give my son prayerful treatment. The pain subsided and gradually ceased, so that the lad had a restful night. By Monday the ankle was vastly improved, and on Tuesday he went back to school.
