RECOGNIZING THE DIVINE SONSHIP

[Original article in French]

CHRIST JESUS declared (John 3:17), "God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." Could any assurance of peace be more comforting or richer in hope than this? And how it lends us courage! Like the expanse of the heavens above us is the extent of the divine mercy unfolded in this assurance. Luminous with stars of grace, it lights our sometimes gloomy night.

However, to receive the fullness of its blessing, we must discern what Jesus meant by the Son, the Messiah or Saviour of the world. The recognition of true sonship opened up indescribably wide horizons and enabled Jesus to experience on earth the joys of close communion with divine Love. Yet the purity of this exalted teaching, to which so many adhered whose hearts were touched by Truth, was eventually lost sight of and was not fully restored until Mary Baker Eddy heard anew the song of angels. It became audible to her during a time of trouble. A new understanding of God and man flooded her thought with light, clothing her with strength for her holy mission, a mission which was to give to the world the liberating revelation, Christian Science.

This Son who is come to save the world, this messenger from eternal Love, is the pure and mighty reflection of infinity. Mrs. Eddy recognized through spiritual discernment that, as she says, "Christ presents the indestructible man, whom Spirit creates, constitutes, and governs" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 316). The ideal, eternal Christ-nature glowed in Jesus with all its pure light. It conferred upon the incomparable Saviour divine elements and power, made him the spokesman of the eternal Word, and proved the splendor and strength of divine individuality. Christian Science teaches us the permanence of this ideal nature. Inviolate, it exists eternally at the point of the absolute, justifying this appeal: "Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me" (Ps. 7:8), that is to say, according to the truth of being.
