Joy in Motherhood

Release from the bondage of maternal anxiety and fear is one of the many blessings Christian Science is bringing to mankind. Through understanding the real man as the son of God, made in His image and likeness, the child of His care, divinely directed and protected in all his activities, the human mother may experience serenity, satisfaction, and joy in her thought of her child.

Jesus many times referred to God as "Father," and the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, has brought to light the motherhood of God, since He is the sole source and creator of all that exists. In her spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer, on page 16 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy interprets the phrase, "Our Father which art in heaven," as meaning, "Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious." Authority for this term is given in the first chapter of Genesis, where it is recorded that "God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." Therefore God includes both masculine and feminine qualities; He is the Parent of all, the Father-Mother God. Love is the essence of motherhood, and Love in Christian Science is synonymous with God.

Man, made in the image and likeness of God, forever includes and expresses the right idea of parenthood in imaging forth the divine Father-Mother. In Genesis we read that God saw all that He had made and pronounced it "very good." Thus He expressed complete satisfaction with His offspring. Divine Mind recognizes the perfection of its idea man. Man, reflecting God, divine Love, reflects Love's understanding of and joy in all that is lovely, and in so doing he expresses the true sense of motherhood.
