The Fulfilling of the Law

On page 250 of "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy are these words: "I make strong demands on love, call for active witnesses to prove it, and noble sacrifices and grand achievements as its results."

A woman had suffered for many years from a disease pronounced incurable by several reputable physicians. It seemed each night as if it might be the end. After becoming interested in Christian Science, she worked and studied to overcome this condition with the help of practitioners. She became a student of the Bible and of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and our Leader's other writings. She subscribed for and read the periodicals, became a member of a branch church and took part in its activities. Still the erroneous condition persisted.

One beautiful afternoon, when the student stood on a corner waiting for a streetcar, she seemed to be suffering more intensely than usual. In order to keep from falling, she was just about to swing her arm around a post for support when the thought came, "God is my support." As she stood there she realized suddenly that her greatest need was to express more love towards her husband, friends, and all with whom she came in contact. A great desire to do this filled her thought. With new-found meaning and sublime confidence in God came the words of the prophet, "Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward." Instantly the pain left her, and she felt free. Complete healing followed normally and naturally. The car came and she boarded it as happy as a child. No words can describe the exaltation she experienced, the light of Christ, Truth, that flooded her consciousness at that moment as she stood in the crowded streetcar holding on to a strap. She had caught a glimpse of heavenly glory! Thus she was assured of God's protecting, omnipotent care; and as the days passed in gaining a larger sense of love and service she lived in the joy of Love's healing presence.
