Steadfast Thought

On page 122 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we read, "The barometer,—that little prophet of storm and sunshine, denying the testimony of the senses,—points to fair weather in the midst of murky clouds and drenching rain." Is not this the position of each one of us when we hear and accept the Word of Truth; when in spite of all the seeming clouds of sickness, sin, and despair we hear and accept the wonder of wonders that God is infinite Love?

Wonder of the ages, that God is Love, infinite Love, filling all space, leaving no room for His unlikeness! What a sense of burden falls from us; what deep thankfulness fills our heart as we realize the truth! And we desire to share it with all whom we meet, and are surprised that everyone is not so willing as we were to accept the good news. That is just it; they are not yet willing. Like Felix at Cæsarea, who answered Paul, "Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee," they seem not ready to share our new-found joy.

But with the acceptance of the truth which Christian Science reveals, the student has taken only his first step forward. With his spiritual gaze fixed on God's love, he begins to take the next step and to deny the false testimony of the material senses; and what joy is his as he makes his first demonstration of Love's allness, and the false testimony of material sense disappears into nothingness!
