Arise and Shine

"ARISE, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." Thus did Isaiah call upon the people to awaken to the possibility of so understanding and reflecting God that all men might know how great and good God is! The prophet then went on to say: "The Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising." While he was speaking specifically of the church, this was undoubtedly an admonition to each individual to rise to the understanding of the reflected glory which belongs to each as the child of God; for how else could the church shine forth as the exponent of God?

To Christian Scientists this call comes daily and hourly with ever renewed insistence. They know it is only as they prove God's ever-presence and all-power through demonstrating the truth as revealed in Christian Science that others will see the glory of God and desire to come to "the brightness of thy rising." To this end they know only one all-embracing motive or purpose,—so to reflect good that God may be thereby glorified and all men may thus be turned to Him. Then all shall come, as God's sons, seeking their own inherent ability to express good. In this endeavor Christian Scientists are learning to understand the Christ, Truth, which has only to be exalted to human consciousness in order to draw all men thereto.

How perfectly Jesus understood the way to lift up the Christ, and how royally he did it! Never once from the beginning of his earth-life to his triumphant exit therefrom did he ever fail to exalt the Christ. Always he was relinquishing the false sense of a selfhood in matter, that the truth of being, or the Christ, might appear, expressing the goodness of God. Jesus thus went before us with the one purpose that he might so reflect the perfection of God that men would come to understand God's glorious nature and desire, even as did he, to know and honor the Father.
