My interest in Christian Science was first aroused because it gave such a practical and just explanation of what heaven is. It seemed very unjust to divide mankind into only two classes,—those who were to go to a place of eternal peace and those who were to go to a place of eternal torment. It had also bothered me greatly to think that there could be any one, no matter how sinful, who could not at some time turn from his evil ways and find everlasting peace, rather than be consigned to eternal torment because he had not as yet repented. A study of Christian Science revealed that heaven is a spiritual state of consciousness, which we experience in just the proportion that we "put off" the material and "put on" the spiritual.

Christian Science having so justly and perfectly answered these vital questions, I also turned to it for physical healing, of which I was very much in need. While there still seem to be problems to solve, nevertheless I am so changed for the better that friends and acquaintances often remark that I look and act like an entirely different person. The gaining of an understanding of our spiritual self does necessarily mean that we are being born anew, for Spirit is exactly the opposite of matter. When I first came into Christian Science, among other things I was suffering from nervous melancholia, the awfulness of which it would be impossible to describe. I could see no reason for living; I hated the sunshine, and gloried in darkness. Now I love the sunshine, and can smile when I meet people, no matter how great a burden I may be laboring under, knowing that with God "all things are possible." This thought is a sure cure for discouragement, if we hold fast to it.

I wish to give thanks for a healing which I experienced at a time when influenza was prevalent. This trouble attacked me in a very severe form. Accompanying the heavy cold, fever, and weakness there was also a severe pain in the head, which did not cease night or day for several days. Without Christian Science treatment, it seems to me I should have gone insane. In the meantime pneumonia and weakness of the heart developed. However, through the earnest and loving efforts of a practitioner, these errors were gradually overcome; and in the, to material sense, incredibly short time of one week, I was at my office again. I still seemed to be very weak, and had occasional fits of coughing; but I called on a practitioner each noon, and after a quiet and uplifting talk was able to go back to my work for the rest of the day. Very soon every vestige of the error had disappeared into its native nothingness, leaving me free from the after effects that mortal mind would have us believe in.
