Christian Science and autosuggestion are antithetical....

Grand Rapids Herald

Christian Science and autosuggestion are antithetical. Autosuggestion is peculiarly an operation of the human mind, the mortal or carnal mind which Paul declares is "enmity against God." It proceeds from human will and it is, therefore, wholly material. Christian Science, on the other hand, is based solely on the Bible. The successful healing work in Christian Science is accomplished through divine Mind, God, in the same manner and by the same method as that employed by Christ Jesus. It is, therefore, essentially spiritual. The Bible tells us that on one occasion, after Jesus had healed dumbness so that "the dumb spake," the unbelievers of that day charged him with casting out devils through Beelzebub, "the prince of the devils." Jesus replied that "every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation," which was only a different way of saying that the so-called human mind, which produces disease, is powerless to heal it. He then enlightened his hearers relative to the power through which his marvelous works were wrought in these words: "But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you." Jesus promised that all who believed on (understood) him, should do the works that he did. It is in obedience to his commands, in accord with his teaching, and in fulfillment of his promises that the healing work in Christian Science is accomplished. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writing on page 445 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," says,"Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick;" and farther on, "The human will which maketh and worketh a lie, hiding the divine Principle of harmony, is destructive to health, and is the cause of disease rather than its cure."
