[Written for the Sentinel.]

SHADOW

My heart was full of rapture yesterday;
Ecstatic joy my being overflowed,
For Love with me sojourned. There was bestowed
On me surcease from discords all; yea, they
Dissolved to nothingness. Ah, but today
Love seems no more to brighten my abode!
Sweet yesterday my world effulgent glowed
In Love's glad light. Whence came this shadow gray?
This blight of yesterday's ecstatic mood
Is but some fear that, cloudlike, would the light
Obscure, and fain would sever me from good—
A cloud of sense, reluctant in its flight.
Infinite Love keeps e'er its constant course;
From Love no dark, no shadow has its source.
