The Ministry of Childhood

It is recorded that on one occasion Jesus taught his disciples a vital lesson through a little child. They had asked him, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? and his answer was given when he called to him a little one and set him in the midst of them and said, "Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

We are all familiar with the saying that "children should be seen and not heard," and however this may be misinterpreted or misapplied, it is worthy of our consideration. When the Master made a little child the object of a wonderful lesson, it was not what the child said that enlightened the disciples, but rather what the child was,—what he reflected of Truth and Love,—and this was clearly the lesson intended,—the lesson for us to-day. The beauty of childhood is something before which we may well stand in awe, ere the shadows of false material sense fall upon it, and shut out, for a time at least, that which makes it so fair. The purity, the simple trust, the giving of love without a sense of barter,—these might well lead the poet to say,—
