Red flag
Fiction: “Christian Scientists aren’t supposed to feel sad or indulge negative emotions.”
Fact: Really? Jesus got angry with the Pharisees once. He was upset by their rigid focus on religious rules when there was a man who badly needed healing (see Mark 3:5). He also wept when his friend Lazarus died (see John 11:35). Anger and grief would certainly qualify as strong negative emotions.
Who says we aren’t supposed to feel? Emotions both good and bad are part of our daily experience. So it isn’t what we feel that is as important as how we handle our feelings. The negative ones can get us into trouble, but they also can be helpful.
