The riches of gratitude
Originally published in the November 2, 1966 issue of The Christian Science Monitor
Would we be rich? Then let us be grateful. Gratitude is a secret treasure. It is not a substitute for wealth nor a prelude to it. It is wealth itself.
The Scriptures show important reasons for everyone to be grateful. There is one God and Father, one power, and He is good, for He is infinite Spirit, or divine Love. He governs the universe, including each of us, whom He has made in His image, with intelligence and love and without personal favoritism. We live in Him, in His presence, not in matter. And the understanding of these truths supplies our human needs. All this the Bible tells us. Eyes and ears tell a different story about man’s existence: a short span of confused years, limited abilities, undisciplined desires, unfulfilled wants. Which account is right?
