Christianizing commerce

Originally published in the June 22, 1967 issue of The Christian Science Monitor

People generally may not be in the habit of thinking of commerce in connection with religion. Perhaps this is because business transactions have not always measured up to the standard of the master Christian, Christ Jesus, who taught, “As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31

But today the start of an awakening to the necessity of the Golden Rule in the realm of buying and selling, in which so many are engaged either directly or indirectly, is becoming apparent. To Christianize business, we need to replace self-interest with concern for others, deceit with honesty, greed with generosity, material aims and sharp practices with Christian motives and acts.
