Romans 12:1

Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

“Living” sacrifice may sound contradictory, but Paul is elevating the tradition of killing animals to the Christly act of devoting one’s whole being to God. And just as sacrifices in Jewish rites were to be without blemish, the Christian’s offering must be pure and sinless. A scholar remarks: “We offer ourselves not ignorantly, like animals brought to slaughter, but intelligently and willingly.”
