Seeking our own in another’s good

It is always heartening to hear someone say that they opened this magazine, or one of its sister publications, The Christian Science Journal or The Herald of Christian Science, read an article, and thought, “This is just what I needed!” We have probably experienced this ourselves.

But what if instead we find ourselves flipping through the pages and thinking, “There’s nothing here for me,” or “I need a spiritually deeper article,” or one of the myriad other thoughts through which negativity tries to use us.

I once attended a Christian Science lecture that I was really looking forward to because the speaker had written an article for the Journal that I found so good. I couldn’t wait to hear what more was going to be shared. But after ten minutes or so I felt that the lecture was that article in so many ways. At first I was disappointed. “There’s nothing here for me,” I thought. “I’ve already read the article.” And then I looked around and saw a fairly large audience, with many people I didn’t recognize, for whom these ideas would be very new. My thought completely turned! I was suddenly filled with gratitude that this lecture would speak to these unprejudiced minds, these hearts seeking the spiritual truths of Christian Science that our Church shares through its many activities, including lectures and print publications.
