My spiritual memory card

I turned a corner on the beautiful, steep, meandering trail, and came face to face with the gorgeous jagged peaks of the Canadian Rockies. The sun was just coming up. I had jogged several miles into the forest and was excited to take a few shots with my digital camera, which I often carry with me on early morning runs when I’m traveling somewhere new.

I’d pulled the camera out of its sleeve, flipped the switch on, and zoomed in, when I noticed a red flashing light and a message across the screen: “No memory card.” I remembered that I’d been looking at some of my pictures the night before and had left the memory card in my laptop, which was in my car all the way down at the trailhead!

I paused for a minute to think about how I’d timed the run just perfectly to see some of the morning colors and had already run several miles uphill, carrying my camera with me every step of the way. Yet without this tiny, fingernail-sized memory card, my camera was completely useless.
