When the pastor calmed me

Recently, I had a wonderful healing experience. I had applied for several jobs, and received a call to come in for an interview. It had been a while since I’d interviewed in a formal setting, so I was somewhat nervous. I woke up that morning, read the Christian Science Bible Lesson as usual, and studied and prayed with the desire to really experience the presence of God.

The week’s Lesson was: “Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?” It had many wonderful selections from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, the books that serve as pastor of The First Church of Christ, Scientist. I found many affirmations of God’s power and control, and of Mind’s government of His own spiritual universe. It also had the story of Jesus stilling the storm, “rebuk[ing] the wind, and say[ing] unto the sea, Peace, be still.” The Bible passage goes on to say that “the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:39).

When I finished my morning studies and prayer, I went on to several other activities. The interview was scheduled for mid-afternoon. Around 10 a.m., I became very fearful about the interview. For about two hours, it seemed as if my thought was raging like a tornado. I couldn’t seem to settle down, and though to all outward appearances I was going about my business, I knew I needed to be healed of this turbulent state of thought. Suddenly, it seemed as if my whole life was hinged on this one interview, and although I knew that my life was really all God’s, and that God has a perfect plan for me, I couldn’t seem to “get there” emotionally. Beyond this, I began to experience an upset stomach and felt nauseated. This seemed to mirror the turbulence I was experiencing mentally.
