Freed from night terrors and insomnia

For years I would react to stress with insomnia, and, when I did sleep, I was often awakened by frightening dreams and images that even had me bolting out of bed, heart racing, as if someone or something were lurking in the shadows.

In order to find relief I turned to a meditation practice that involved silently repeating passages from inspirational texts, including the Bible. This calmed me down, but the nighttime disturbances continued. I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School as a child, and through my meditation practice I rediscovered these spiritual roots. The many hymns I had learned, the 23rd and 91st Psalms, the Lord’s Prayer, and passages from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, all returned to the front of thought with powerful effect.

This eventually led me to a whole-hearted study of Christian Science, through the many avenues established by its founder, Mary Baker Eddy, including the weekly Bible Lessons, class instruction in Christian Science, church services, and Christian Science magazines like this one. This exploration for me was about getting to know God as revealed in Christian Science—a God who is wholly good and is Love itself, Love being one of the seven synonyms Mary Baker Eddy assigned to expand on the concept of God in the “Glossary” of Science and Health, including also Truth, Life, Soul, Spirit, Mind, and Principle (see p. 587).
