Practicing Truth

For the lesson titled "Truth" from January 17-23, 2011

With a recognition of the greatness of God’s truth, this Bible Lesson, titled “Truth,” opens with the Golden Text from Psalms: “. . . the truth of the Lord endureth for ever.”

Mary Baker Eddy was profoundly committed to the truth of God. She designated Truth as a synonym for God, explaining in Science and Health: “Mortals try to believe without understanding Truth; yet God is Truth” (p. 312, citation 2). Of the seven synonyms Mrs. Eddy used to define God (see Science and Health, p. 587), Truth is the one that appears most often in her published writings.

Jesus saw truth as his essence and purpose. He said, “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth” (John 18:37, cit. 20). One of his best-loved sayings is at the heart of Christian Science and this Lesson. It is a promise for those who continue in his word: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32, cit. 11). The Lesson’s ten sections richly shed light on how we know the truth and how it makes us free.
