TWO 'FAST' HEALINGS

In December 2003, on the brink of exam week at the university where I teach, I began experiencing incapacitating flu symptoms. When I called a Christian Science practitioner to request prayerful support, she reminded me of the following from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought" (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 495).

At first, I focused on the phrase "the illusion of sickness." Classifying sickness as an illusion helped me view the symptoms I was experiencing as nothing more than "smoke and mirrors" conjured up to trick me into dishonoring God by believing in something unlike His goodness. This perspective calmed me, but I was still confined to bed, physically incapacitated.

Then, shifting my focus to the phrase "the illusion of . . . sin," I realized that I was feeling resentful over the unusually short interval accorded to faculty members that semester for grading final exams and averaging semester grades. Whereas we usually had 48 hours following the last final exam session to accomplish these tasks, this semester the last exam ended at 4:45 p.m., and semester grades were due by 8:30 a.m. the following day.
