BALANCE, NORMAL MOVEMENT RESTORED

About a year and a half ago, my wife was out of town on business and I went out to dinner one evening with friends. When they drove me home that night, I had difficulty walking from the car to my front door. I did not have a normal sense of balance and felt disoriented. I became quite fearful and decided it was time to pray.

Throughout my life, I had successfully trusted scientific prayer as it's taught in Christian Science for every kind of need — healthcare, finances, guidance in my work and relationships. At this moment, though, the fear itself seemed debilitating, and I found myself clinging to the fact that God was in charge of my life; that He was omnipresent and therefore with me at that moment. That was the one thing I recall holding to — the fact that I was in God's presence. I was able to open a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and read the first line of "the scientific statement of being" — "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 468).

I spent that night, somewhat like Jacob in the Bible, wrestling, and in my case it was wrestling with fear. Early the next morning, I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. I don't remember what she said to me at that time, but I do recall her great resolve in denying any truthfulness to the debility I was feeling. I'm sure that the basis of her prayer for me was that God is the only Creator and has created only what is like divine Spirit, spiritual and whole.
